Frequently asked questions
Here are some common questions about the counselling process, and how I work with my client. Please have a look through these answers, and if you have any further questions, you can contact me here.
You can come for a one-off, no-obligation session which normally lasts 50 minutes. This is the best way for you to decide if you like me, feel like you can trust me and want to continue.
We will discuss what brings you to counselling and what you hope to achieve by coming. I will also ask you some questions about yourself and your history. This allows meto gain a better understanding of how I may be able to help you.
If I believe another practitioner or type of counselling would suit you better, I will discuss that with you.
How long counselling will last for you really depends on why you are coming to counselling. Everyone is different, and every problem is different too.
Sometimes we can understand and resolve a specific problem within a few sessions. Generally, people find more sessions helpful for serious issues, so that they can gain healing, growth and lasting change.
I recommend that we agree to meet for a minimum of six sessions, with a review on the fifth session. We can decide after those five sessions if you will find further sessions helpful. There is no upper limit to the number of sessions you can attend.
Yes. I abide by the BACP's ethical guidelines on confidentiality. This means that I will not share any details about you or our work together in counselling, unless compelled to do so by law or professional ethics. This also applies to people who contact me to ask about counselling, even if we never start counselling.
If you want to know more about my privacy policy, you can read about it here.
Generally I meet with most of my clients once a week. I am happy to meet with clients more or less often if we both feel it would be helpful. Please let me know if you think a different schedule would suit you. We can change the frequency of our meetings at any point.
I would generally not recommend meeting more than two or three times a week, or less than once a month.
Appointments are available in the daytime and evening during the working week. 'Early bird' sessions are available during the week at 7.45 am. I also have a limited number of sessions available at the weekend.
It is best to commit to the same time, on the same day for your sessions. If your schedule makes that difficult, I will do my best to accommodate you, though I cannot guarantee that I will be able to see you every week at a time which suits you.
When you come to your appointment, please arrive as close to the agreed time for your session as possible. Due to the lack of a waiting area, it is not possible for me to accommodate early arrivals.
The introductory session and all standard 50 minute sessions: £40 per session.
Block booking of 5+ sessions: £36 per session. You must pay for block booked sessions at the time of booking. We will agree and fix pre-booked session dates at the time of booking.
You can make cash payments at the end of each session, or you can make online payments on the day of the session, before the session begins. I will not be able to book any new sessions with you while unpaid sessions remain outstanding.
We can both use the first session to see if we are a ‘good fit’. If we are, and once we have agreed on the day and time of our meetings, that appointment time is yours. Regularity and commitment form an essential part of the therapeutic process.
